             abstract = "This paper describes the development of a research project that 
                         intends, among other things, to investigate the habitants 
                         environmental perception of the Bel{\'e}m river hydrographic 
                         basin. For this purpose the referred project was conducted by 
                         three different research groups (environmental monitoring, 
                         environmental education and geoprocessing). The environmental 
                         education group developed a questionnaire that was applied to the 
                         resident population of the river basin in conjunction with the two 
                         other groups. The referred questionnaire comprehended 26 questions 
                         and the information gathered with its application in a total of 
                         472 georeferenced points were, in the first place, arranged and 
                         tabled in the Microsoft Excel. Later, the questions and responses 
                         were grouped according to their similarities. Total values were 
                         inputted to the 472 georeferenced points accordingly with the 
                         specific values inputted to each question. SPR format archives 
                         were created and edited in order to be imported by the software 
                         SPRING. Once the points were imported, four thematic maps 
                         representing the environmental perception of the basin population 
                         were generated. These maps points out that the referred population 
                         does not have sufficient interest in the environmental issues that 
                         affects the area were they live in and, for this reason, programs 
                         and actions of environmental education must be a priority of the 
                         municipal organizations in order to change the hydrographic basin 
                         reality.",
